The US monetary authority reduced borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second reduction in the current year amid economic turbulence originating from the government closure and trade duties.
Decision Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank
The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.
Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Changes
In a statement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement reads. “Price increases has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”
Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.
Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions
The Fed typically studies BLS data to determine employment trends, including the count of new jobs created to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in August.
The figure of jobs added to the economy in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.
Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Decline
Though the bureau was set to publish last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its release once the shutdown started. Private payroll firm ADP reported recently that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.
“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman said recently, which he had previously said comes from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Shows Gradual Increase
Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still released its inflation report for September that showed that costs are going up, although slowly. Costs increased three percent over the last year, the highest since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
