Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for hours when multiple of them floated into the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations impacting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend floated over the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves especially affected by weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that these practices become unprofitable and present no risk to civil aviation."
Regional Security Context
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
