Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in implementing replay systems.
Replay technology will make its debut at The Championships this year.
Athletes are granted the option to contest specific decisions from the official, mirroring the system currently in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.
This innovation is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This development arrives only a year after the AELTC introduced ELC, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line judges.
Scope of Challenges
Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to re-examine specific decisions, such as:
- Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
- Potential interference end of a point.
Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a competitor can ask for.
Practical Application
An illustrative incident took place in Indian Wells recently, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.
The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."
The umpire viewed a replay and determined the player was responsible for interference, granting the point to Medvedev.
Wider Implementation
Video reviews aren't new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews implemented at all of its events.
Further Updates
Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This solves instances where fans have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was in or out.
Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
